Three Singapore Hospitals Launch PET Scanning for Faster Cancer Diagnosis

On 26 July 2003, Lianhe Zaobao reported that Singapore General Hospital, Mount Elizabeth Hospital and AsiaMedic had begun offering positron emission tomography (PET) scanning. Compared with MRI or CT, PET scanning was reported to be 20 to 30% more accurate, with results available within half a day.

The cyclotron that produces the radioactive isotopes for the scans was a S$5.5 million joint investment by Singapore General Hospital, Parkway’s Medi-Rad Associates and AsiaMedic. The newspaper described it as the first collaboration of its kind between a public and a private hospital in Singapore.
